There are two kinds of window regulators, the manual window regulator and the electric window regulator. A manual Ford truck window regulator is composed of numerous components like a worm gear, several spur gears, linkages, a mechanical plate and a bar used to support the window glass. This type of window regulator works as motorists manipulate the window through a hand crank. When it is turned, a worm gear/spur gears combination would then be activated. The rotation of the various gears would then activate the mechanical plate, that actually raise and lower the window glasses. On the other hand, the linkage arm supports the window glass.
The same action is done in the electric window regulator, except that motorists can manipulate the windows with a touch of a button. Also sometimes called as power or automatic window regulator, does not have crank handle that would have to be rotated. The electric window regulator has a small electric motor integrated with the switching components of the vehicle. This motor activates the different gears required to lift or to lower the windows.

Electric window regulators, or power windows, now come as standard features in modern Ford trucks and cars. Today, other features are added to these auto parts. One is an automatic up or down feature, where holding a button for a preset time will close or open the window completely. Another feature is that power windows stop and roll down automatically once it detects an obstacle in its closing. This is an important child safety feature as this prevents a child’s hand being caught in a closing door window. Some power windows can also be controlled via remote control.
