Honda unveils new Civic Type-R Europe

Honda has released the first details of the next-generation Honda Civic Type-R.

After the maiden appearance of the production version concept in Geneva early this year, details of the new Honda Type-R have been released with more horsepower (198bhp instead of 197) and refined comfort levels. It has also focused on integrated styling and handling tuned for enhanced responsiveness and predictability.

The performance car is framed in the Civic's Euro-only three-door hatchback body style and augmented with spoilers at the front and back, a black honeycomb grille and larger intakes in the front fascia, seven-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels, and triangular shapes in the form of foglamps on the up front and sweet-looking exhaust tips poking out at the back. While the Type-R sits 15mm lower than the regular model the car's styling doesn't quite match that of the concept, but it still looks dramatic, aided by seven-spoke alloys, spoilers at the front and rear tailgate, Type-R logos on the brake calipers, and a black honeycomb mesh grille sporting a red 'H' badge.

Though still powered by the 2.0-litre DOHC i-VTEC engine, the unit has been significantly reworked to improve responsiveness using a new balancer shaft and drive-by-wire throttle control. VTEC variable valve timing and VTC variable inlet camshaft technology continue to underpin the engine structure. Acceleration figures are expected to be virtually identical to the 6.6-second, 0-62mph time of the outgoing car and the new car should match its top speed too, powering on to 146mph.

Extra strengthening has been introduced into the floor cross member just ahead of the central fuel tank, around the upper front suspension mountings, while the lower cross member (just ahead of the engine bay) provides greater rigidity. The overall result is a more predictable chassis, with levels of responsiveness and stability that are some of the best in class. At the same time, the damper settings deliver enhanced ride comfort, so the Type R is easier to use in all conditions and on all surfaces.

The interior features racing-style front seat buckets with large black Alcantara bolsters and red stitching, red fabric seat cushions and backs. The seat bench at the back repeats the same color combination. The Dual Zone, two-tier dash is lighted by red dials set-off by gun-metal effect switch panels on either side of the central display. The black leather-covered steering wheel has red stitching and central "H" logo as the gear shift knob is painted with aluminum-finish with black boot and red stitching. And, to make each Type R even more exclusive, a plaque engraved with the car's unique serial number is placed just ahead of the gear lever.

Honda is also promising a GT model, which will blend the Type-R mechanicals with extra kit including cruise control, dual-zone air conditioning, foglights, automatic headlights and wipers, and curtain SRS bags.

Pricing is yet to be announced for the Type-R. It will be built alongside all the Euro Civics at the company's plant in Swindon and go on sale next March in the United Kingdom.
